Comenius - Reach for the Arts!
Comenius is part of the European Community's Lifelong Learning Programme, aiming to promote cooperation and strengthen the European dimension in Education. It seeks to develop knowledge and understanding among children and school staff of the diversity of European cultures and languages and the value of this diversity. It aims to help young people to acquire basic life skills and competences for their personal development, for future employment and for active European citizenship.
As a school we have been fortunate enough to secure funding to allow us to create links with schools in five other European countries, namely Turkey, Portugal, France, Slovenia and Belgium.

The children in the Foundation Unit made their own representation of Hockney's landscape pictures both on canvas and on paper. They also used ICT and an arts programme to explore shape, colour and pattern in the style of David Hockney.

They then looked closely at Hockney's still life pictures and created their own using the pictures themselves and real flowers in a vase as a stimulus.

The three Key Stages then chose an artist from one of our Comenius partner countries and made canvasses and other creative products reflecting their choices. The Foundation Unit looked at the work of French artist, Henri Matisse. They made their own self portraits on canvas, using a colourful background and pen drawing of themselves. They also made their own representations of his famous collage painting, 'The Snail'. The Key Stage One Unit looked at the work of Turkish artist Ahmet Gunestekin. The children produced canvasses celebrating his style using vibrant colours, circles, swirls and lines.

The children in Key Stage Two looked at the work of Portugese artist Dordio Gomez who painted landscape pictures focusing on a variety of different types of landscape. All the children in school really enjoyed the arts project, showing great interest and enthusiasm. Their work was celebrated in a Comenius Launch where parents and members of the community including the Deputy Lord Mayor were invited to see all their hard work.
